FAQ: Do winning bidders get tax receipts?

Question: One of our winning bidders asked if they can get a tax receipt for the value of their "purchase" - is that right?

Answer: We're not tax experts, but our understanding is that the donor of the item is eligible for a tax receipt, but winning bidders are not (you can't double receipt...) The one exception is if a winning bidder pays more than 25% greater than the retail value - they can get a tax receipt for the amount above the retail value. But it is pretty rare for someone to pay more than the street value of an item, so we're not aware of that ever happening.

Note: This is related to Canadian tax regulations - it may be different in other jurisdictions.
